Exploring MES’s Impact on the DRC’s Mining Industry: Insights from CEO Manoj Patil and GM Guy Amisi on Innovation, Local Manufacturing, and Sustainable Development
During the 18th edition of DRC Mining Week, M&B Magazine interviewed Manoj Patil, CEO, and Guy Amisi, General Manager at Mining Engineering Services, in its press room.
Mr. Patil, can you tell us about Mining Engineering Services (MES)?
MES has been a complete engineering solution in the DRC since 2010. The concept of MES is to provide an end-to-end solution to the mining industry. We are able to provide a complete solution for all construction activities, starting with design, engineering, and construction.
What services do you offer to the mining industry in the DRC?
This includes design, engineering, manufacturing, construction, commissioning, and installation. We also provide engineered products for electrical, mechanical, and civil needs. In addition, we have in-house manufacturing in the DRC, such as copper, cables, HDPE pipes, anodes, and cathodes.
Mr. Amisi, tell us about recycling.
In recycling, we take copper and make copper and aluminium electrical cables. We have used batteries that we transform into new anodes, and we also recycle plastic into granules.
What is MES’s vision for workplace safety?
As certified in South Africa, workplace safety is very important to us. We ensure workplace safety meets mining standards.
Mr. Patil, can you tell us about any specific projects?
We are currently involved in high-voltage power line projects. For Kico, we are building the plant. For STL, the hydrometallurgical project. Then, for MUMI and KCC, we are carrying out
renovation and maintenance services. We are also involved in the SMPP project at MUTOSHI for CHEMAF. Various construction activities are also underway at KAMOA. As you can see, our activities are diversified, and we are involved in almost all the mines in the DRC.
Mr. Amisi, what are the next steps in your development in the DRC?
We have a vision, if I may put it that way, of reducing dependence on Zambia and South Africa, and producing everything in the DRC. HDPE pipes, electrical cables, and anodes used in copper production are manufactured locally. And we have a new company called Clean Congo, with the aim of providing industries and communities with integrated, innovative, and sustainable solutions for managing solid waste (biodegradable and non-biodegradable) and liquid waste (industrial wastewater and graywater/domestic wastewater). All this for a greener Congo.
